I tried improving some of these photos with Photogene iPhone application. Nokia E71 flash was also used in one of the pictures.

My blog is back online after the server broke that kept it dark for a week or so.

I’ve added some new photos of people who wanted or I have forced to try my frames and let me shoot them. I’ve forgotten to mention that I found these as well as my old frames in Cazze Sanomatalo and I’m looking forward to see what they’ve found the next time I feel I need to refresh my look.

There was also a surprise waiting for me when I came home last week: the lastnightsparty: Where Were You Last Night? book with awesome photos taken by Merlin Bronques. After seeing lastnightsparty photos the nightlife in Helsinki feels just so boring and already last season.

I don’t yet have any photos of me wearing my new glasses but I continued my past experiment and took pictures of my friends wearing them. To see the real color you’ll have to catch me and take a look yourself. From far away or in bad lighting it just looks black or brownish, but it’s actually green.

I really like the detail in these frames that there is no screws but this tension-based hinge design that also gives it a unique—maybe somewhat industrial—look I haven’t seen on other frames.

Got my glasses today as promised and I’m ready for next week with a fresh look. Not a total makeover but still. The model of these is called Herbie and is said to be inspired by Jazz legend Herbie Hancock. And the color is translucent bottle green.

And yes, I can see again.

I ordered new eyeglasses with green semi-transparent Mykita No.2 frames. Those should be ready before the end of the week. No photos available yet, have to ask someone to help me with that.

I thought my old Robert La Roche’s had somewhat large frames but they’re nothing compared to the massive look with my new ones. I found out that Mykita has also been featured on Monocle’s Quality of Life Index.

For a second I was actually thinking of updating the Windows on my old Athlon XP 2800+ PC to Windows 7. Virus updates were 288 days old — it had been a while I had logged into my Windows account since I’ve been using my MBP and running Ubuntu on the desktop. At work too I had just wiped out the Windows installation as I had not used it for a year and thought it was just a waste of my smallish harddrive that could serve my Ubuntu (Arch linux before that) better with some added LVM flexibility. I downloaded the compatibility test application and was really excited, maybe the Windows could have had something in it that would make me love it and actually find some use for it.

The test application told me I can’t upgrade my XP to 7 without doing a clean install. There is supposed to be some kind of a migration app that uses an external drive, but I don’t want to install all the software again. Well, it anyway says on the Microsoft website that I should buy a new PC for Windows 7 so maybe it’s not for me or for anyone else who think their old PC will do just fine as it is. Vice versa, I remember that actually downgrading from XP to 2000 helped some old PC’s to last yet few more years.

Oh, and how many Windows users are really excited about the Windows 7 launch date that is — I don’t know when. I haven’t been invited to any Windows 7 launch party to see what it is all about.

SCF Huolto replaced my broken iPhone 3G with a new one — cost me 373 € that I hope will be paid by the travel insurance, as only thing that really didn’t work was the silent mode switch. There was some rumors that broken iPhone would be sent abroad, but got it back in few days if you don’t count the time I was waiting for my insurance company to process my accident.

Activated and restored it successfully, though had to look for a while how to restore the existing backup I made before taking the phone to service. Could not do it when activating the phone as the software had to be upgraded manually first and there was no help on the docs I was reading. Maybe I should buy one of those ugly protective cases at least when travelling or night out.

Upgraded to Safari 4 Beta and I found out that my bookmarks are not in sync with iPhone anymore. Trying to figure out if it’s my MBP or iPhone that is not working, tried resetting them both already. Why can’t I see — or even organize — my bookmarks on MobileMe web service too?

Sunnuntain Hesaria lukiessani viehätyin Ilkka Malmbergin kirjoitukseen Uusi vuosi 1809 sai alkaa tukka hulmuten (HS Digilehti, maksullinen), jossa kirjoittaja kertoo huvittavasti historian tapahtumista. Jäin kaipaamaan muita sarjan juttuja, jotka olen onnistunut ohittamaan edellisten viikkojen lehdissä enkä jutussa mainitusta osoitteesta niitä onnistunut löytämään. Olisin kaivannut juttusarjalle omaa sivua, jonne olisi koottu kaikki tarinat yksiin kansiin, mutta pettymyksekseni tämä vaatisi hieman työtä tylsän arkistohaun kanssa. Taidan unohtaa koko haun ja kaivaa eteiseen kasaamani erikoisen lehtipinon kätköistä kaikki nuo menneiden sunnuntaiden Hesarit — mikäli en niitä ole jo heittänyt menemään — ja yksinkertaisesti leikata jutut talteen luettavaksi. Saamattomuuskin voi kääntyä eduksi.

Toinen asia mitä päivällä pohdin, oli nykyisen kotikaupunkini historia, josta en ole oikein perillä. Onkohan olemassa mielenkiintoisia kirjoja Helsingistä, jotain värikkäästi kirjoitettua, kenties mukaan mahdutettuja mielenkiintoisia anekdootteja pelkän faktan lisäksi. Kenties hieman naiivia suhtautua asiaan näin, mutta kaipaisin jotain opusta kaupungin menneisyyttä tuntemattomalle.

Työpaikalta löytyy paljon erilaisia lappuja, joita työntekijät liimailevat toisilleen.
